Jesus the Good Shepherd

"I am the Good Shepherd
and I know mine
and mine know me.
"

John 10:14

Good Shepherd Catholic Church is a faith-filled community
located in Schertz, Texas, just northeast of San Antonio.
We strive to spread the good news of Jesus Christ
to all God's people, through our words and through our works.

We hope you will enjoy our little cyber-corner on the world-wide web,
and come back and visit us often.

Our parish family joins the world community in prayer for the people of Haiti.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR PARISH

In November, 1967, foreseeing the rapid growth of the Schertz-Cibolo area, Archbishop Robert Lucey approved the purchase of a ten-acre tract of land as the site for a new church.

The Immaculate Conception Development Committee was formed and first met in May of 1969.  For eighteen months, the committee worked to raise the funds necessary for the construction of a new church.  On Christmas Day 1970, Immaculate Conception Parish was established for the Schertz-Cibolo area, with a mission church in Marion.  Since the mission church was also named Immaculate Conception, the new church in Schertz was renamed Church of the Good Shepherd.

Construction of the Schertz Parkway building began in April 1972 and was completed in October 1972.  The Most Reverend Francis Furey, Archbishop of San Antonio, dedicated the new church.

In December 2001, construction of a larger church began on Live Oak Road in order to accommodate the ever-growing parish.  In November 2002, the new church and classrooms building was completed.  On November 10, 2002, retired Bishop Bernard Popp officially dedicated the new, larger church.

With Schertz projected to continue to grow at a rapid rate, and with similar growth expected in the surrounding towns, our parish is quickly outgrowing the new building.  Plans are underway to construct a new church once the initial funds are raised.  The current building will then become a much-needed Parish Hall.

Our parish community is excited about these changes, and we look forward to ministering to our growing Church family.
